The ACR Resident and Fellow Section (RFS), in conjunction with RAN, recently wrapped up an exciting few weeks engaging trainees with ongoing advocacy efforts in the world of radiology. After success with last year’s webinar with Texas radiologic residency programs by members of the ACR Government Relations office and RAN, another webinar was held on July 8th for Pennsylvania residents with an aim to expand to other interested states or programs.

A July 11th webinar “Paving the Way for Radiology Advocacy: Empowering Trainees and Radiologists for the Future” was co-hosted by ACR Government Affairs, the RFS, and the Medical Student Section (MSS) with speakers including Dr. Nilda Maria Williams from the RAN board, Ashley Walton as ACR Director of Government Relations, and Dr. Sally Midani from the RFS Executive Committee. The webinar offered a valuable introduction to trainees about the current landscape of policy and advocacy. Ashley Walton provided a comprehensive overview of ACR advocacy on trainee-centered policy priorities including expanding funding and positions for residency training, with pearls of wisdom on dovetailing advocacy with your career shared by Dr. Nilda Maria Williams. The recording of the webinar will be made available on the ACR website soon. If anyone is interested in connecting with opportunities for trainee advocacy or to host a webinar in your state or institution, don’t hesitate to reach out to the RFS Advocacy and AMA Liaison, Sally Midani, MD.

It is not too late for coordinators/directors to select a resident from their program for ACR’s RAN Representative leadership role for the 2023-2024 academic year. Please have the program’s selected representatives submit the RAN resident liaison form. If you have any questions, please contact ran.rfs@gmail.com.

In an article written by Fatima Elahi, DO, MHA, on the Power of Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Dr. Elahi shares lessons she learned as a radiology resident working with other disciplines at the American Medical Association (AMA) and the impact physicians in training have on forming a collective voice for patient advocacy.
